Helping Your Child Feel Comfortable at the Clinic

A little preparation can help your child feel more comfortable. Find simple ways to prepare, support your child during the examination and bring useful photos of their rash.

Before the visit

Explain the visit in simple, reassuring words: “We’re going to see a doctor who will look at your skin and help us care for it.” For toddlers, a brief explanation close to the appointment is usually enough. Playing doctor with a favourite soft toy can help make the experience more familiar.

Bring something familiar

Bring a favourite toy, small book or comfort item. It can give your child something familiar to hold or focus on during the visit.

Give your child time to settle in

Your child may want to watch and listen before joining in. They do not need to greet the doctor or answer questions straight away. Let them stay close to you while they get used to the room and the people around them.

Support during the examination

When appropriate, your child may be examined while sitting on your lap. Tell the doctor what helps your child feel safe and whether they have had difficult medical experiences. Small choices, such as which hand to look at first, can help them take part. Avoid using injections as a threat or promising that everything will be painless.

Have photos ready

Have clear photos of the rash at different stages ready on your phone. These can help the doctor see how it has changed, especially if it comes and goes or has faded before the appointment. If possible, note when the photos were taken and any treatments used.

Bring your questions and treatment details

Bring the names or photos of medicines and skincare products your child uses, along with any relevant reports. Note your main questions so we can discuss what matters most to your family.
